Chimpanzees and humans are closely related, in fact we share 98% of our genes. They are highly social animals who care for their offspring for years, and are highly intelligent when it comes to solving puzzles and using tools like spears and branches to get their next meal. They are a species of great ape native to the forest and savannah of tropical Africa, and can live to over 50 years of age.

Chimpanzee cubs are born after a gestation period of about 230 days, usually in the safety of the forest canopy. At birth, they are extremely vulnerable, weighing just around 2 kilograms and are completely dependent on their mothers for care and nutrition. Chimpanzee mothers nurse their cubs for up to 4-5 years, though the cubs will begin to eat solid foods around 6 months. During their first few years, cubs stay close to their mothers, learning important social and survival skills by observing and mimicking adult behaviors. They also begin to interact with other members of the group, developing social bonds with their peers. As they grow, chimpanzee cubs play a significant role in the social structure of the troop, forming friendships, learning from older members, and eventually becoming integrated into the group’s hierarchy.
